Be organized - Use a three ring binder with dividers. File IEP's, Evaluations, Medical Records, etc. Bring a list of concerns. Don't forget to bring a photo of your child to remind everyone of who you are there for.
If you can't be present for the CSE on the date that is given to you, call and reschedule or consider whether you want to participate via tele-conference.
Remember that you can bring someone with you. A friend, relative, or a provider who has worked with your child. Let them know they are there for moral support, to take notes, keep you on track, or ask a question that you might have overlooked.
Plan ahead; think about what you want for your child and the reason you want it. The more clearly you can express these things to the rest of the team, the more effective you are likely to be.
Have a clear idea of your child's needs and strengths. Identifying these needs will make it possible to add supports or accommodations to your child's IEP Recognizing your child's strengths is equally important because it is by building on those strengths that progress will be made.
Share with the team your awareness of your child's social and emotional needs if you think that they may be interfering with his/her ability to learn. Once identified, they can be addressed in the IEP
